National Space Workforce
The initiative aims to cultivate a diverse, skilled, and innovative workforce for the rapidly expanding space sector, driving economic growth and solidifying our position as global leaders in space exploration and technology.
The Australian Space Agency’s decadal plan aims to create 20,000 additional jobs related to Space by 2030. This means that the generation leaving school in the next few years will be the generation entering the Space workforce at this time. As the largest population centre in Australia, New South Wales bears the privilege and responsibility to set the tone for the Australian space generation.
Led by UNSW Canberra Space, the NSW Department of Education and the NSW Space Research Network with support from the Lockheed Martin and the Australian Space Agency, the National Space Workforce initiative consists of five interconnected events.
National Space Workforce Initiatives

National Space Workforce
National Space Workforce (NSW) is an initiative to make a career in Space accessible, and to raise awareness of the very real opportunity that Space represents for all Australians.
The initiative is informed by a whole-of-pipeline perspective and aims to operate at all developmental levels, from driving STEM engagement in schools to the development of professional Space skills programs and the access to them.
As the largest share of the nation’s population, NSW shoulders the largest share of the responsibility for creating Australia’s skilled space workforce. As such, the initiative is leading the nation from Sydney, creating a place for collaborative space education and workforce development in Australia and the Asia Pacific region.

National Space and Deep Tech Centre
The National Space Workforce Initiative aims to establish a National Space and Deep Tech Centre in Sydney, Australia, to promote public interest in space science, foster R&D, and attract investment and job opportunities. However, challenges include securing funding, finding suitable locations and infrastructure, and addressing regulatory and legal issues. The feasibility of this project depends on resource availability, political will, and stakeholder support.
